Construction of the plug
27 juni 2006
This is my work area where I will be constructing everything:
I printed the original drawings with a 110% enlargement, and I glued them onto some 5mm thick multiplex.
All bulkheads are sawed andhave been attached to some small strips of wood to attach them to the building board:
First 5 bulkheads have been attached to the building board:
4 juli 2006
All bulkheads have been properly attached :
You can clearly see that all bulkheads align perfectly:
Attaching the very first strips in 3mm balsa wood:
After some more covering, the ships form becomes clearer:
Different angle:
10 juli 2006
Most of the ship has been planked now, just the front is still open :
I'm finally getting there... almost entirely planked!:

Finally the hull has been completely planked :
Preparation for the bow:
A balsa wooden block has been attached to form the bow part :
Finally a profile shot, with part of the hull already sanded smooth. The ship's beautiful roundings are apparent now, and I slowly begin to understand why a ship is referred to as a "She":
19 juli 2006
The hull is entirely sanded now, and already some filler has been applied one those placed with bumps:
Fiberglass on top:
Polyester resin applied:
I will need lots of filler to covre the entire hull, to sand it smooth:
The hull has been entirely covered with polyester filler, and I can start sanding!

after lots and lots of sanding......

First time of the building board :
Removed the strips that held the boat to the building board:
Making the floor:
and the deck:
Deck had been layed... only the cabin needs to be done...
When I put the deck on, I deliberately made it overlapping the sides of the hull. This way I create an edge that will make it easier to construct the mould!
2 september 2006
I applied an evenly coat of spray putty, so that I could check if there were any inconsistenties left :
Again, keep sanding and apply filler, and sand again :
16 september 2006
I transformed my work bench into a complete spray cabin using old newspapers :
Primer applied:
I then applied the high glossy spray paint. The color is a great purple metallic, simply because I had them laying around. Since it's a plug, color is not important, so I decided not to spend moeny on another color spraycan!

It's probably just me - but I was not very happy with my spraycan paint job. I did not think it was glossy enough. Fortunatly, I knew someone who was able to spray my plug using professional equipment and a 2-component paint. Result was very good:
With this perfectly crafted plug, I can continue with the next part of the process: creatin of the mould!
